How to Use Your Insurance Benefits

Each individual benefit plan varies. Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance. Here’s how to navigate your insurance coverage:

Locate your insurance card

Do you have an HMO or a PPO plan?

One of these acronyms should be listed on your insurance card. However, if you can’t find it, call the 1-800 number on your card and ask whether you have an HMO or PPO policy.

If you have an HMO policy…

You will need to choose a therapist that is “in network” in order to use your insurance coverage.

I am considered an “out of network” provider, which means that you will not be able to use your HMO insurance to pay for my services. You may decide to pay out-of-pocket. I accept credit/debit card payments.

If you have a PPO policy…

You can choose to work with any counselor you like—including me. Your insurance plan may have out-of-network benefits, which means they will reimburse you for a portion of our session cost. The amount reimbursed is based upon your specific insurance plan.

How do I find out if and how much I will be reimbursed?

Contact me at 224-236-2296 or Helena@BrieflyCounseling.com to schedule a consultation call and I’ll gladly check your out-of-network reimbursement benefits for you.

Payment Options

You opt not to use any insurance at all

This option is often used by parents who:

  • Have an HMO
  • Do NOT want a mental health diagnosis assigned to their child (I must provide one if insurance benefits are being used)
  • Have an unusually high deductible that is unlikely to be met in a calendar year

In this case, payment is expected in full at each session and will be charged to the credit/debit card on file.

You opt to use your out-of-network benefits and seek reimbursement

I support you by providing complimentary claim submission to your insurance company if you have out-of-network benefits. My automated system, called Thrizer allows me to submit your claim the day of our session and reimbursement (post deductible) will arrive in your bank account in as little as two weeks! (A 1% fee applies). Again, I am not an in-network provider, so you’re responsible for the fee upfront.

Thrizer does provide another option (once your deductible is met) for those wanting more cash flow flexibility. You can opt to pay your co-insurance only for our sessions instead of paying my full fee upfront and waiting for the reimbursements. This can save you on average 70% upfront on our sessions. (A 5% fee applies).
